Oxia is definitely one of the best Greek private islands currently
on the market. Located among Greece’s Ionian Islands,
which, together with the Aegean islands, feature the highest
tourist activity in Greece, Oxia may be the last island not yet
developed. Its 500 hectares (1236 acres) boast clear waters
and lush grounds.

Oxia is half the size of Capri, spanning 5.9 km (3.6 miles) in
length with a width varying from 1.5 km (0.9 miles) in the North
to 0.7 km (0.4miles) in the South. This rough beauty persuades
with dense pine groves penetrated by limestone walls
and a craggy rough coastline with three large bays that form
ideal beautiful and sheltered natural harbours.

The northern part of the island is almost mountainous, with
elevations to 421 metres (1380 ft) and the terrain slopes gradually
to the South with full vegetation (bush and pine trees).
The surrounding waters host plenty of fish. Local fishermen
have built bow nets in the large bays which may easily be removed
or utilized for future supply. The Island is uninhabited
and undeveloped except for a derelict but picturesque lighthouse
(which might be profitably restored for “light-house”
fans).

Climate:
The Ionian Islands have a mild Mediterranean climate with
high rainfall in the winter and high temperatures during the
summer, pleasantly moderated by the maїstros, light to moderate
northwesterly winds that rise in the afternoon and usually
die away at sunset. In the winter the northeasterly gregali
winds sweep over the Ionians with forces to 8 points on the
Beaufort scale.

Oxia is one of the Ionian Islands, an archipelago which comprises
Antipaxi, Corfu, Cythira, Antikythera, Lefkada, Ithaki,
Keffalonia, Paxi und Zakynthos. The Ionian Islands are
scattered along Greece’s west coast from the Albanian border
to the Peloponnese. These islands are highly frequented
tourist destinations owing to the mild Mediterranean climate,
stunning landscapes and cultural background. The nearest
large Ionian Island is Ithaki - 38 km (24 miles) by water, where
Homer’s Odysseus was king.

Oxia may be reached by flights to nearby airports and a subsequent
boat trip, although a helicopter landing pad should be
arranged for future needs. The most convenient airports are
Keffalonia on Keffalonia island) and the Patras/Araxos airport
(near Patras on the Peloponnese). As to time and distance
Araxos may be superior, but it is served by charter flights only,
whereas Keffalonia airport is serviced by local Greek airlines
at least twice a day.

For daily supply, the nearest town to Oxia is Etolikon (population
of 7200), only a short haul – 2 km (1.3 miles) - by boat and
then 21 km (12.7 miles) by car). For more sophistication, Patras
is the third largest town (population 171,616) in Greece.
Here you will find all facilities including hospital. The distance
by boat is 56 km (35 miles).

Oxia lies close by the mouth and delta of the Acheloos river
– 2 km (1.2 miles). The Acheloos, which springs in central
Pinos, is the second largest Greek river with a length of 220
km.

The southeast sector lends itself for development for four
practical reasons:
The slope of the ground is less (lower building costs),
The vegetation is more luxuriant
Buildings directed to the East or West in Greece realize
higher proceeds.

The island features a high accessibility. On of the natural
harbours in the West, East and North could be integrated
into the ferry transport grid and the development of another
harbour as a yacht marina would be strongly recommended.
The mountains in the North of the island would be of use for
sport activities such like hiking, climbing or mountainbiking.
Hiking trails would be of benefit. Beaches could be established
at the large bays or at some of the several small coves.
Sand can be provided from the sand bars in the vicinity. The
execution should make no trouble, as it is a common procedure
in Greek, where natural beaches are quite rare.
Water supply could be provided by the Acheloos river, a
water conduit could be run from the river to the island. Additionally,
there is a small fountain on the island. Nevertheless,
any „modern“ island schould be facilitated with blackwater
treatment systems and a freshwater desalinisation plant
coupled to the electrical generating unit.
